Greek Life at EMU

The Greek Life POD in Campus Life is designed to support fraternity and sorority life within the EMU community. Greek students are supported by a number of resources on and off campus, including the National Panhellenic Conference, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated, the North-American Interfraternity Conference, Diversity and Community Involvement, VISION, the Holman Success Center, and Snow Health Center. Through guidance of the governing councils, NPHC, IFC, and CPC, individual chapter advising, academic support, programming, and alumni involvement, Greek Life at EMU promotes success in all areas of life for the students involved. 

Greek Community Service Hours

The greek community performed 1465 hours of community service this year. This is the first year that the community has compiled such a list and we look forward to gathering this data every year so that we may begin to identify and analyze trends in hours and places Greeks are serving the community.
Acts of service this semester include:

• Volunteering in the ER at St. Joe's
• Helping to organize the Ann Arbor Marathon
• Donating time at multiple food banks
• Reading with children in after school programs
• Cleaning and assisting at the Huron Valley Humane Society
• Renovating Ypsilanti houses with Habitat for Humanity
• Helped to organize Girls on the Run
• The Corner health center helping kids create a healthy attachment to adults

Greek Community Academics

SOLAR session 6

Dr. Donald Ritzenhein a professor in the Communication department presented to 9 student leaders regarding effective fundraising topics. Dr. Ritzenhein was excited to present about this topic as he has run several successful fundraisers most recently a 1 million dollar campaign at Wayne State. 

Dr. Ritzenhein's presentation focused on fundraising through creating relationships. Establishing and keeping relationships with alumni both recent and older. Dr. Ritzenhein stressed the importance of being unique when it comes to fundraising, and target audiences for each fundraiser. Dr. Ritzenhein also went on to talk about finding donors for the organization and hosting events in that donors name. However, a large portion of this event went on to talk about how to create relationships with individuals who could be donors. 

Finally, towards the end of the session Dr. Ritzenhein discussed basics on grant writing.

The students who attended this session were very inquisitive about Dr. Ritzenhein's strategies, and almost all of them asked for him to give another more detailed presentation about grant writing.

Personal and Organizational Branding

Gregg Costanzo was asked to present on personal and organizational branding. Gregg has an incredible presentation centered around the importance of personal branding, and related the whole presentation to the importance of organizational branding as well. 

Students really enjoyed Gregg's presentation ranking it 4.75 out of 5. Some students comments were:

"I really enjoyed this presentation, I was able to reflect a lot about how I am represented online."

"I was able to take lots of information from this presentation and put it towards my professional life."

"Our organization is really going to benefit from this information."

Greek Officer Symposium is a program designed in collaboration with multiple departments on campus to offer Greek students an opportunity for leadership development. Some sessions are specific to officer positions within Greek life while others are beneficial to any community member. This year, Greek Officer Symposium featured sessions that allowed for conversation about gender, sexual assault prevention and intervention, alcohol safety, apathy and funding resources.

For this event Officer Dorsey from the Public Safety office asked if she could present to student organization leaders and they could delineate safety information to their students.

Officer Dorsey gives a very interactive and relevant presentation about students safety and awareness. She also discusses harassment, sexual harassment, and sexual assault.  

Students rated this event very highly. A students reaction to Officer Dorsey's was, "She was really engaging and I learned a lot of great information."
